During a beauty night with my girlfriends, we got on to the discussion of face exfoliation and why it's so god damn important! When it comes to exfoliating my face, I am shamefully one to admit that I don't follow a strict routine and will often skip this step. Being honest, I don't really understand the true importance of exfoliating the face, as I feel it's something which doesn't really get much air time compared to cleansers and make up products in the beauty world.

  • Promotes healthy, clear, radiant skin and an even skin tone
  • Removes dead skin cells from the skin's surface
  • Leaves skin feeling super soft and smoothe
  • It can help the skin ageing process by promoting a youthful glow
  • It helps our skin care products work better and make up sit better on the skin
  • Can help prevent spots/blemishes/breakouts, as impurities/dirt are being drawn out and scrubbed away.

In previous years, not much thought has gone into which exfoliator(s) I have chosen. However, as I am now much more insightful into the whole process of exfoliating, I have become a lot more aware that I have probably been rubbing a whole load of chemicals and god knows what else around my face, which now doesn't sit well with me. You could argue this goes for our make up and cleansers too (but I'm not so sure there's an obvious way to make these numerous products at home!). So in this post, I am going to show you how to make your own DIY face exfoliator, which is super easy and free of chemicals, preservatives and ingredients which we can't even pronounce.

  • 1 tablespoon of ground coffee
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon of Manuka honey
  • 1 tablespoon of brown sugar
  • Squeeze some lemon juice

Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl, until it forms a paste type consistency. The coffee contains antioxidants which are great for your skin, as well as coffee which can also help boost blood flow to the surface of your skin, giving you a glow. Olive oil is super moisturising for our skin, which is great as an exfoliator ingredient. Manuka honey has antibacterial and inflammatory purposes, which are key for our skin, especially if it's dry or a little inflamed. The brown sugar acts as a good key ingredient to rub away dead skin cells and promote glowing skin. Finally, the lemon juice is good for scarring/pigmentation, as it helps to lighten and even out skin tone due to the vitamin C and citric acid. I find this mixture will usually last a good couple of weeks, when used one-two times a week. Once made, simply pop it in a spare jar to preserve it.

I now religiously exfoliate two times a week using this DIY mix of natural ingredients. I think it's important not to over do the exfoliation - eg. give your skin a chance to breathe too. I have noticed not only is my skin smoother, but the main thing is my make up goes on a lot better which I am so happy about. I also feel like my cleanser can now do its job and penetrate deeper into my skin, removing impurities and dirt (ew), as my skin is properly exfoliated and the dead layer of skin (and whatever else) has been removed.

Please check you are not allergic to any of these ingredients. If so, simply swap them for another similar product. For example, swap the olive oil for coconut oil or coffee/brown sugar for ground oatmeal etc. Also, you don't have to use this DIY exfoliator solely on your face, you can also use it on your body too - just increase the ingredients so there's more product to work with. So for example, if you double up one ingredient, double up all of them so the mixture remains consistent.

I hope you guys like this DIY exfoliator. Enjoy your skin care routine and have fun exfoliating your face!
